Gabriel Halpern
April 22-23, 2023
We are thrilled to bring you a workshop with the absurdly talented, knowledgeable, and hilarious yoga master Gabriel Halpern. Gabriel holds a BA in Philosophy, an MA in Health Psychology, and was trained at the Iyengar Yoga Institutes in San Francisco and Pune, India. Gabriel has been practicing since 1970 and leads workshops nationally. You are going to love his teaching style—he has a truly unique ability to impart massive amounts of information with passion, joy, and humor.
Workshop Outline
This weekend will be a deep dive into your practice. Gabriel will spend the weekend teaching:
THE FOUNDATIONS OF ASANA
The key to the safe and effective execution of yoga postures is stage-appropriate methodology. Learn how to sequence and modify poses to get the most out of your practice. Each class will begin with a dharma discourse that explores yoga philosophy and its contemporary embodiment.
SHARPENING THE EDGE OF YOUR PRACTICE
For continuing and advanced students, further growth comes from challenging the limits of what the body can safely do. As the Master quips, "You yourself don't know what you are capable of." This class will take your practice to the next level by showing how to sequence for standing poses, inversions, and baby backbends. We will end the session with a long and deep, guided relaxation as learning how to let go is a significant part of the inward aspect of yoga.
GOOD FOR WHAT AILS YOU
Each student who comes to yoga brings with them their pre-existing conditions. As if that weren't enough to contend with, consistent practice uncovers hidden weaknesses and unrealized potential. Come prepared to name a pose that is painful or just doesn't feel good. Gabriel will show you how to improve your alignment and get relief. Learn why healing is different than curing and discover your perceived limitation versus your actual limitation.
PRANAYAMA
Many people are accustomed to living with tension rather than with peace and vitality. Yoga teaches that pranayama infuses one's life with vigor and calm by regulating inhalation and exhalation and transitions between breaths. The class will begin with a series of restorative postures which are a pre-requisite for regulating the breath to make it slow and subtle. Gabriel will unpack the difference between abdominal, deep, and pranayamic breathing with explanation, instruction, observation, and correction.
